On Christmas Eve in the year 722, the missionary Winfried sets out from the cloister of Pfalzel on the Moselle into the German forest. There he finds a pagan people preparing a sacrifice beneath the great Thunder-Oak, and his challenge to their gods ends in the felling of the tree and the gift of a young fir.
