Quentin Durward, a penniless young Scot, arrives in France in 1468 and joins the Scottish Archers who guard the cunning King Louis XI. Entrusted with escorting the fugitive heiress Isabelle de Croye, he is drawn into the deadly rivalry between Louis and Charles the Bold of Burgundy, and into a journey through gypsies, ambushes and the rising at Liège.
The first of Scott’s novels set outside Britain, and a great success in France, where it helped launch the vogue for historical romance. Download the free EPUB.
