Sir Aymer de Lacy, ambushed by archers in a forest, finds the encounter is the beginning of his service to the grey-eyed, ruddy-haired Countess Beatrix of Clare. Their secret betrothal is caught up in the plots of Richard of Gloucester and the struggle for the English crown in the closing years of the House of York.
