Milne matched the instruments named in Hippocrates, Celsus, Galen and Paul of Aegina against the bronze survivals dug from Pompeii and elsewhere, and identified them one by one: scalpels and probes, bone forceps and trephines, catheters, cauteries, the speculum — each photographed and set beside the operation it served.
