Writing in Latin in the early first century AD, Celsus summed up Greek and Roman medicine in eight books. He opens with rules of healthy living and regimen for the weak, then turns to fevers and diseases, medicines and compounds, and finally surgery, including the treatment of wounds and fractures. James Greive’s eighteenth-century translation keeps the author’s own notes.
