Inglis qualified when women barely could, built a maternity hospital in Edinburgh, and in 1914 was told by the War Office that her offer of women-staffed field hospitals was not wanted. She took them to France, Serbia and Russia anyway, was captured, went back, and died within a day of returning home in 1917.
