Guerini worked from the original sources: Etruscan gold bridgework and the Egyptian and Greek texts, Celsus and Galen, the Arab writers, the barber-surgeons and tooth-drawers of the Middle Ages, then the Renaissance anatomists and finally Fauchard, who in 1728 made dentistry a profession rather than a trade.
