Thomas Malone, an Irish-born detective, investigates the reclusive scholar Robert Suydam and a string of kidnappings in the immigrant tenements of Red Hook, Brooklyn, and is drawn into the cellars and tunnels where something older than the city is worshipped. The story is notorious for its open contempt for the immigrants it portrays, a prejudice central to its horror.
