A writer in his forties and his sister Frances accept an invitation to stay with their widowed friend Mabel at her country house. The place is beautiful and comfortable, yet something is badly wrong: a weight of narrow, condemning belief left over from the house’s past seems to press on every guest, and the narrator begins to see his hostess as she is not.
