A mysterious rich man returns from America to a country house on the Rhine and engages a young scholar as tutor to his son. Auerbach builds a long novel of education, love and conscience around the household, whose fortune has its roots in American slavery, linking German society of the 1860s to the Civil War across the Atlantic.
A vast novel of ideas by one of the most popular German writers of his century, in the 1871 American translation. Download the free EPUB.
