In January 1892 the North German mail steamer Roland leaves Bremen for New York carrying Friedrich von Kammacher, a young doctor whose life is in ruins. He has followed the dancer Ingigerd Hahlström aboard, and the crossing becomes a voyage into catastrophe, and the story continues in New York.
