Holley’s Samantha is a farmer’s wife with an unanswerable common sense, and the joke is always the same and always effective: the men and the clinging Betsey Bobbet produce the standard arguments against women’s rights, and Samantha takes them apart while doing the washing. It outsold most of the movement’s serious books.
