In Paris in 1612 the young, poor Nicolas Poussin climbs the stairs to the studio of the painter Porbus and meets the strange old master Frenhofer, who talks of art like a god. Frenhofer has worked for years on a portrait of a woman that no one may see, and to gain a glimpse of it Poussin must offer something precious of his own.
