In a provincial town after the Restoration, the Marquis d’Esgrignon and his circle of old nobles live as if the Revolution never happened, and their rivals mock them as ‘the collection of antiquities’. The marquis’s son Victurnien goes off to Paris, runs up debts and commits a forgery, and the family’s loyal notary Chesnel risks everything to keep the name clean.
A sharp, sad comedy of class and pride from The Human Comedy, for readers of Stendhal and Trollope. Download the free EPUB.
