Prince Andras Zilah, an exiled Hungarian who has sworn to live for his country’s freedom, is persuaded by a matchmaking baroness to marry Marsa, a proud, half-Gypsy beauty with a Russian father. Their betrothal fête opens the novel in high Parisian society, but a former lover, Michel Menko, holds letters that threaten everything.
