Polyeucte, an Armenian nobleman newly converted to Christianity, is married to Pauline, daughter of the Roman governor Felix. When Severus, the Roman hero she once loved and believed dead, arrives in triumph, Polyeucte’s zeal leads him to smash the pagan idols, and duty, love and faith pull all three toward martyrdom.
