In 1835 the heiress Clémentine du Rouvre marries Count Adam Laginski, a Polish exile in Paris. His devoted friend Thaddeus Paz quietly runs their household and fortune, and loves Clémentine himself; to guard both friendship and honour he lets the world believe he keeps a circus rider as his mistress.
