Numa Roumestan is the idol of the South, a loud, warm, promise-making deputy who carries all before him at the amphitheatre festival in Aps. His Parisian wife Rosalie discovers the seamy side of the great man as he rises to cabinet rank, while the tambourine player Valmajour, lured to Paris by Numa’s easy promises, pays for them.
