For years Balzac wrote almost daily to Eveline Hanska, the Polish countess he had come to know by correspondence and would marry shortly before his death. These letters from 1833 to 1846 record his marathon nights of writing, his battles with publishers, newspapers and creditors, the books he was planning and finishing, and his long hope of a life together.
