Xavier Rabourdin, a capable head of bureau, has quietly drafted a plan to reform the whole French administration and hopes to be made division chief. His elegant wife Célestine works the salons on his behalf while the clerks, schemers and nonentities of the ministry gossip, scheme and close ranks around him.
A sharp comedy of office life that still feels modern, from Balzac’s Human Comedy. Download the free EPUB.
