Célestine, a chambermaid who has worked in many Paris households, takes a place with a wealthy couple in the Normandy countryside and begins a diary. Between the petty tyrannies of her new mistress and the menacing gardener Joseph, she recalls the vices, meanness and hypocrisy of her former employers, painting French bourgeois society from below stairs.
A biting 1900 satire of class and morality, still startling in its frankness. Download the free EPUB.
