Galbraith takes the four transitions in turn and treats each as a matter of hygiene rather than mystery: puberty and the schooling and clothing that surround it, marriage, pregnancy and childbirth, and the menopause — a stage about which her profession had almost nothing useful to say and a great deal of alarming nonsense.
