Crumpler was the first Black woman in America to earn a medical degree, and practised among freedpeople in Richmond after the war. She wrote this for mothers and nurses: the care of women through pregnancy and childbed, and the management of children’s illnesses, in language deliberately free of the profession’s mystification.
