In 1853 the American surgeon Elisha Kent Kane took the brig Advance north through Smith Sound in search of Sir John Franklin’s lost expedition. This account follows the ship into the ice, two brutal winters, scurvy, sledge journeys and the help of the Inuit, and the crew’s long retreat south by boat over the floes.
