In this introduction to the doctrine of virtue, Kant separates ethics from law and asks what ends are also duties. His answer is two: one’s own perfection and the happiness of others. He works out the difference between strict and wide duties, the cultivation of one’s faculties and of morality itself, and why virtue must be done from duty and not merely according to it.
