Composed in the early thirteenth century, soon after the Nibelungenlied, this epic begins with Hagen carried off by a griffin and moves through three generations to Gudrun, a princess abducted by the Norman prince Hartmut and his father Ludwig. Her years of loyal suffering and the long war of rescue form the heart of the poem.
