On the Marsh Farm beside the Erewash, Tom Brangwen marries a Polish widow, Lydia Lensky, and raises her daughter Anna. The story follows Anna’s stormy marriage to Will Brangwen and then their daughter Ursula, who leaves the land for teaching and university in search of a freer life.
