Pip begins as a willing accomplice and philosophical scapegoat for his sharp younger sister Pipette, and is packed off to Mr. Pocklington’s preparatory school. The novel follows him through schoolboy feuds, a cricket week at Rustleford Manor, golf and the bewildering business of falling in love, as an ordinary boy is made into a man.
