Orphaned as a small boy, Philip Carey is raised by his rigid clergyman uncle and endures school with a club foot. He tries Heidelberg, an accountant’s office and the art studios of Paris before turning to medicine in London, where his helpless obsession with the indifferent waitress Mildred threatens to wreck him.
