The story opens on a damp December evening in Dr. Maude’s surgery waiting-room at Monkswell, and follows a young woman and the people around her as questions of duty, charity, honesty and marriage come to a head. Talk of trouble in Belgium hints that the outside world is about to break in on their lives.
