Ghent’s forecast was not socialism or collapse but a comfortable feudalism: great corporations as barons, a dependent but well-treated population, philanthropy and welfare replacing wages as the bond, and a professional class rewarded for loyalty. It was much argued over and has aged uncomfortably well.
