The story opens over the dunes of the Flanders front, then turns to a sheltered English country household that does not yet understand the war. Rice-paper documents, dangerous secrets, a chase, a man called Rizzio who takes charge and a young woman held prisoner aboard a yacht draw the household into the shadow world of German espionage.
