A royal white elephant, sent from Siam as a gift to the Queen of England, vanishes in New Jersey, and its keeper turns to Inspector Blunt and the New York detective force. Telegrams pour in from all over the country as the detectives follow footprints, collect clues and spend vast sums, while the elephant leaves a trail of wreckage they somehow fail to see.
Twain’s brisk satire of police methods and the detective craze, still funny after more than a century. Download the free EPUB.
