A little man in black makes young Lawrence an offer too strange to accept and too tempting to refuse, and an emerald ring changes his fortunes overnight. Soon he is in a New York of sudden wealth, false charges and pursuit, trying to help a woman in distress named Shirley Rives and to find a girl who has vanished, all the while working out the riddle behind it.
