In the small hours of 22 June 1912, Frank Spargo, a sub-editor on the Watchman, hears that a body has been found in a passage off the Middle Temple. A scrap of grey paper and a cap are the only clues, and Spargo turns detective, following them through a London hotel, a safe deposit and a provincial town toward a crime with roots far in the past.
A brisk classic of 1919 that Woodrow Wilson is said to have admired, for fans of golden-age detection. Download the free EPUB.
