Theophrastus Longuet, a comfortable retired Parisian with a wife and a taste for self-improvement, finds a scrap of paper in an old wall and begins to remember a former life as Cartouche, the bandit broken on the wheel in 1721. Possessed by the robber’s appetites, he lurches between bourgeois dinner parties and crime while his friend Adolphe Lecamus and a so-called Man of Light try to cure him.
