Colonel Rupert Winter, home on furlough from the Philippines, first noticed Cary Mercer in a Harvard dormitory and never forgot him. Years later a train robbery, the disappearance of young Archie, blind clues, a voice on the telephone and a haunted house draw Winter into a hunt that runs through the aftermath of the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and a long-nursed revenge.
