Israel Rank, son of a disinherited aristocrat’s daughter and a Jewish commercial traveller, grows up in shabby Clapham knowing that only a handful of relatives stand between him and a peerage. Coolly, politely and with no pangs of conscience, he sets about removing them one at a time, narrating his progress with polished irony.
