Accum analysed what London was actually selling and published the results with the offenders’ names: bread whitened with alum, tea leaves recycled and recoloured, pickles greened with copper, sweets tinted with lead and mercury, wine doctored with sugar of lead. The trade destroyed his career; the law eventually caught up.
