The narrator builds a quiet summer house in the Berkshires and then discovers that his neighbour is Hawkins, part inventor and part idiot, with the money to indulge every idea. Each chapter brings a new contraption, from a winged fire escape called the Anti-Fire-Fly onward, and a new disaster in which the narrator is somehow involved.
