Frank Softly, well-born and good for nothing, tells his own story: failing as a doctor, selling caricatures, faking old masters and, most dangerously, joining a mysterious doctor whose country house hides a coining business. Love for the doctor’s daughter Alicia complicates everything, and the police are never far behind.
