When the pompous Colonel Grundy’s travelling show goes bust, Dick Prescott and his friends end up with its so-called splendid war canoe. The chums of Gridley High School buy birch bark, learn hard lessons as greenhorns, camp by a lake, plan a race against rivals and run into a lying heir to the Ripley fortune, with Susie and Clara along for the summer.
