Written as a companion to his life of Garfield, Alger’s biography follows Abraham Lincoln from the log cabin and the arrival of a kind stepmother through scraps of schooling, a flatboat trip down the river, clerking in a store, law, politics and the presidency. Each stage is offered to American boys as proof that duty and hard work lead upward.
