Dedicated to William Wilberforce, this 1823 story for young readers follows Samboe from his African home through capture, the horrors of a slave ship and his mother’s near-drowning to his fortunes afterwards. Its sympathy is sincere, though its picture of Africa and its Christian paternalism are those of an English reformer of the 1820s.
