Four children take up the pen: William Tinkling, who has married Nettie Ashford in a closet at the dancing-school; Alice Rainbird, whose fairy tale of Princess Alicia and the magic fishbone became famous on its own; Lieutenant-Colonel Robin Redforth with a pirate yarn; and Nettie, imagining a land where grown-ups are the ones sent to school.
