Willie, the son of a country doctor, earns his odd nickname from his readiness to turn his hand to anything. He builds a horseshoeing forge, studies a water-wheel, learns to read before he knows his letters, digs in the garden and finds what he did not expect, and becomes useful to his family and neighbours.
