Continuing the story begun in By Pike and Dyke, Henty turns to the years 1585 to 1604, when English troops under leaders such as Sir Francis Vere helped the Dutch hold out against Spain. His young heroes see sieges and battles in the Netherlands, fend off robbers on the road, and take part in the struggle at sea in the era of the Armada.
