A grandmother knits and hums in her easy chair, a cat quarrels with a parrot, kittens tumble about, and a boy orphaned in New Orleans works his way to the California gold diggings. This small miscellany of verses and stories, chosen for young readers, moves from cosy fireside scenes to brief adventures.
