Lessons are over at Horsemandown, Robin Dalrymple has declared Mangnall a humbug, and a wet half-holiday leaves the children restless. Uncle Algernon fills the hours with stories of the old house and its oak staircase: Lady Greensleeves, the Maids of Taunton in the year of Monmouth’s Rebellion, Blue-Coat and a Maid of Honour.
