When her mother must leave San Diego and her doctor-cousin sails for the Philippines, small Josephine Smith is sent across the country as a human express parcel to an uncle she has never met. The uncle proves hard to find, the house she reaches is full of strangers, and the winter that follows brings twins, a boy next door, a sick old man and a good deal of mischief.
